Networking Strategies to Grow Your Business

People want to do business with people they know, like, and trust. Business is all about relationships. Networking is key to opening doors, finding opportunities, building relationships and connecting with clients. Here are some of our tried and true strategies for effective networking to help boost your business.

Strategic Planning and Networking

Strategic networking means setting goals and creating a strategic plan to achieve them. When you create a strategy for your networking, you work to find the right opportunities to meet the type of contacts you need for success.  At CI, we believe networking should be about mutual value and success. We consistently look for clients, partners, mentors, and friends in our network who we can serve and who can help us reach our company goals, and we encourage you to do the same. Be the kind of contact and relationship you would want to have.

Crafting a Networking Strategy

  • Set Goals: Decide what you want from networking—more clients, partnerships, or industry insights.
  • Identify Contacts: Find key people and groups who can help you. Connect with them through events and social media.
  • Pick the Right Events: Choose networking events that match your goals, like trade shows or industry meetups.
  • Use Social Media: Leverage platforms like LinkedIn to connect with professionals and showcase your expertise.
  • Keep it short, simpleand authentic. Have a quick, clear message ready to explain who you are and what you hope to achieve.

Building and Maintaining Relationships

  • FOLLOW-UP: Did we shout that? You bet we did!! After meeting someone, send a message mentioning something specific from your chat to jog their memory and show you’re interested. Follow-up is the real work. Don’t be annoying, but show quick responsiveness and genuine interest.
  • Add Value: Offer useful information, make introductions, or share your expertise. Helping others builds strong, reciprocal relationships.
  • Stay in Touch: Regularly check in through emails, calls, or social media to show you value the connection and want to keep it going.
  • Attend Events: Attend networking events regularly to stay visible and grow your network. Regular attendance can lead to more opportunities and continued connections.

Business Cards: A Classic Networking Tool

In today’s world, traditional methods like business cards and modern tools such as Vcards and social media connections are crucial for networking. Despite the rise of digital communication, traditional business cards remain an asset as they provide a tangible reminder of your interactions and make it easy for contacts to reach out. Always keep them handy at events and ensure they include all your contact details. In lieu of traditional cards, you can opt for a scannable Vcard or digital business card that automatically shares and requests contact info.  We have used options like QR codes and Uvoo in the past for these more modern tech-savvy options.

In-Person Networking is still King

While digital networking is important, face-to-face interactions remain vital for cultivating relationships.

  • Be Authentic: When you meet someone face-to-face, be genuine. People connect better with sincerity. Show interest in their work and just be yourself.
  • Listen More, Talk Less: Good networking is about listening. Understand their needs and interests and think about how you can help. This builds trust and shows you value the connection.
  • Follow Up Quickly: After meeting someone, send a prompt message. Refer to topics from your chat to show you were engaged. This helps solidify the connection and lays the foundation for a lasting relationship.

Long-Term Networking Success

Networking isn’t a one-and-done thing—it’s an ongoing strategy for growing your business. When utilized correctly, it can be a driver for development and success.  So, create a networking strategy and remember:

  • Build a Diverse Network: Connect with professionals from different industries and backgrounds. A varied network brings different perspectives, opportunities, and support.
  • Make Genuine Connections: Focus on forming real relationships instead of collecting contacts. Meaningful connections are more likely to lead to lasting opportunities.
  • Be Consistent: Make networking a regular part of your business routine. Look for chances to meet new people and strengthen existing relationships. Consistent effort will pay off over time.
  • Adapt to Change: The business world is constantly evolving, and so should your networking approach. Keep up with industry trends, new tech, and other changes that could impact your business. Be open to trying new networking strategies and adjusting as needed.
  • Follow-Up: A connection is only as good as the follow-up interactions that build an actual relationship, not a one-time connection. Make a point to follow up quickly and consistently.
