Spring Cleaning

The weather is getting warmer and we can feel spring in the air. We know we might still get another round of snow… but skies are blue and we look forward to the days they stay that way!

What does this have to do with marketing? Everything!

Many of us use springtime to do the deep dive into cleaning our homes.  What about putting that same spring energy into reviewing and updating your marketing?  It won’t take too long – like going through your closets! – or be too hard – like taking your windows out and cleaning them thoroughly!

Besides, you will be so proud of the work that you accomplished you are going to want to show it off to all of your contacts… ?

First, review your overall “who, what, when, where, why” and make sure they are reflective of your current marketing strategy, and for how you want to move forward for the remainder of the year.

Second, apply that strategy to a few very specific places:

  1. Your Personal Profiles on social media. Read them.  Are they congruent with your current objectives?  Now go ahead and read them again, pretending that you are not the person you are reading about.  Do they still make sense? Do you need a new profile picture? New images? Join new groups? Add new hashtags?
  2. Your Company Profiles on social media. Do the same process as listed in #1. Do they still accurately portray what your company does, and wants to do?  Are they understandable to people who are not in your industry?
  3. Your Website. What needs to be updated? Do all the links work?  Does your bio need a refresh? Does your website showcase your best work?  Jot some notes and send them to your web design firm to get on their schedule for updates!

This next one is a little more time consuming but important for planning for the future:

  1. Take a look at your branding and materials. Do you need to update some of your regular pieces? Do you need to create new ones?  Do you have everything you need readily available to sustain your sales cycle?

Third, and the most fun part of spring cleaning:  purge!  Get rid of those antiquated brochures and flyers!  Create archive folders and get all of the old files out of the way (or delete them!).  If you have regular follow-up materials, get them into a single place where you can intuitively access them to provide for follow up.

Ahhh, doesn’t that feel satisfying?  Once you have it all cleaned up, take a minute to celebrate the accomplishment.  It will be so nice to have a CORRECT bio to provide for your next virtual speaking or networking event!

Dusting off your profiles and materials may seem like a chore, but it is a darn good use of spring energy to position yourself for the rest of the year and prevent your marketing from getting “dusty”!
