There’s no better conversation “ice breaker” these days than telling people you are a social media manager. It’s almost like being a doctor. Growing social media presence can be challenging. People you’ve just met feel compelled to share their socials’ “aches and pains”. They seek answers as to why their account lacks traction, express their frustration about the challenges, and inquire about possible improvements, often expecting a simple cure-all prescription from me. Most of the time, one simple question will tell me all I need to know without launching into a lengthy discussion of changing algorithms, keywords, and content creation jargon, and that question is: are you engaging with your audience at all???
This is where eyes start to glaze over, and indignance sets in.
“I am engaging, I post every day!”
“I have DM’s???”
“I don’t have time to reply to every comment, like, etc.”
Would you go to a party and not talk to anyone? Or worse, consider a monologue to be a good conversation? I hope you’re saying no; of course not! So why do so many people think social media is only a one-way street?? Isn’t the whole point to be social, create conversation, and ultimately relationships? YES! It is a FACT that social media is a super powerful tool for your business if you actually use it. I can give countless examples of new clients found, services and products sold, new career opportunities launched and so on by thoughtful engagement with your audience. I promise you; it works! But it does require effort.
Don’t post and ghost
Your content may be great, but it’s a huge turn-off if people are asking questions or making comments without any acknowledgment. And replying a month later doesn’t count. Replying within 24 hours is best practice, if not sooner. Don’t ignore your notifications; they are there for a reason.
Create content for conversation
Don’t be afraid to ask questions or include CTA’s asking for advice because your audience WANTS to help. For instance, it can be anything from asking for a good recommendation for a lunch meeting spot to starting a discussion on holiday retail trends with people in your industry. Additionally, offer thoughtful solutions and don’t be afraid to show off your expertise. Sharing referrals is also a great way to build trust and add value to your engagement – don’t forget to tag those you mention, please!
Make time
I know, I know, you’re too busy to be monitoring your socials all day. But I’m pretty confident that you are scrolling before bed, on the way to work, or while waiting for your next appointment. Take this time to like, follow, and engage with new accounts, especially those you would like to cultivate a relationship with going forward. As little as fifteen minutes a day can reap huge results. Not only will it reflect in your account being seen by a wider audience, but that new follower might be your next client.
I always compare social media to planting a seed. If you want that seed to grow and flourish, you need to maintain it by watering it, making sure it is planted in the right soil and gets plenty of nourishment. Your social media works the same way. Don’t plant seeds and expect them to bear fruit when they are withering on the vine due to indifference. A little love goes a long way!
